NOT TO BE MISSED: NAOMI O’CONNELL MAKES WEILL HALL DEBUT

Mezzo-soprano Naomi O’Connell — first-prize winner of the 2012 CAG Victor Elmaleh Competition — makes her Weill Hall Debut on Tuesday, March 12: 7:30 PM.

On Friday, March 8 (9pm), Ms. O’Connell is featured on WQXR radio (105.9 FM or wqxr.org) with a return visit to the McGraw Hill Companies Young Artists Showcase hosted by Robert Sherman. For both Weill Hall and WQXR, her pianist is her regular recital partner, Brent Funderburk.

Her program, Witches, Bitches & Women in Britches portrays female characters ranging from temptresses to kleptomaniacs and home-wreckers. These women live on the fringes of society and trample the restrictions of “shoulds and oughts.”The program features works by Felix Mendelssohn, Hugo Wolf and Francis Poulenc, and a world premiere by New York-based composer Christopher Berg.

CAG ALUM CLAIRE CHASE TO PLAY ROULETTE, BROOKLYN, FRIDAY

CAG alumni and 2012 MacArthur grant winner Claire Chase gives a solo concert this Friday at 8 PM at Roulette, Brooklyn.

The concert features premieres of three new solo flute works by Mario Diaz de León, Marcelo Toledo and Evan Johnson — commissioned by the BMI Foundation, Inc./Carlos Surinach Fund for Concert Artists Guild and written for Claire Chase — as well as Berio’s 1951 Sequenza and Reich’s 1982Vermont Counterpoint. The program is bookended by two performances of George Brecht’s flute soloand is woven together with six different miniature iterations of Pauline Olivero’s open-form score A Fluting Moment, for Jean-Pierre Rampal.Check out the official Roulette website for more information.

STAFF IN THE SPOTLIGHT: VINCENT RUSSO ON CINEMA ARTS CENTRE BOARD

Vincent Russo, a full-time Associate in Booking/Artist Management on CAG’s staff, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Cinema Arts Centre on Long Island. CAC is the Island’s premiere, year-round, independent and international film showcase.
